Suspect Your Ductwork Is Aging? How to Read the Signs

post img In the cold Cincinnati winter, it’s important to your health and your pocketbook that your HVAC system works well to keep your family comfortable and warm. What if you’ve sealed the windows and weatherstripped the doors, but something is still off? It may be time to examine your ductwork. Ductwork is often out of sight and out of mind as part of the HVAC system in your home, but as with pipes in your plumbing system, it has a critical impact on comfort and energy efficiency. Also similar to plumbing, over time it ages, which can lead to trouble.

Signs of Aging Ducts

  • Inconsistent airflow – Are some rooms not getting warm? Does the air pressure from the vent seem weak? This may be a sign of blockage due to age.
  • Increasing heating costs – Does your heating bill seem higher every year? Have you done all the other maintenance, and it still continues to rise? This may be a sign of leaks in your ducts.
  • Evident disrepair – Some homes have easy access to at least some of the duct system. If the areas you can see show signs of rust, holes or other corrosion, it’s time to have an HVAC professional come check the system.
  • Age of home – As technology advances, so does our understanding of design. Modern ductwork is built with long-term energy efficiency in mind, but this wasn’t always true. If your home is an older home, it’s likely the ducts aren’t as efficient as they should be.
What can you do if you suspect your ductwork is in need of a facelift? First, be sure all your vents are clear of obstructions like furniture, and change the air filter regularly. Have your system thoroughly inspected, and if needed, get any leaks properly repaired with long-lasting materials, like metal screws and mastic, for a tight seal. Particularly if you own an older home, consider a redesign for your system.
