Common Signs You Need Heating Repair Service
There are signs you as a homeowner see that indicate help is needed before you’re faced with an all-out breakdown.
- Before a major repair or breakdown, your heating equipment may produce odd smells. These range from a musty odor to acidic, metallic burning smells.
- Strange noises are also a regular indicator of a repair need. Homeowners report these noises sound like clanks, squeals, clicking, or grinding noises. These noises typically signal a problem with belts, electrical switches, or debris in the system.
- Another noise is normal operation sounds, except more frequently than normal. This may be what’s known as “short-cycling,” when the furnace, for example, starts and stops and starts again within a short period of time.
In this case, the heating equipment is not completing its entire cycle and as soon as it realizes it, starts up again. This is a major stress on your equipment.
When You Need a Heating Contractor for Repairs
There are many components critical to safe and efficient operation of your heating equipment. Many are difficult to access or require special tools to assess or repair.
One example is your heat exchanger. Through normal aging the heat exchanger develops cracks. Sometimes, other factors speed up crack development, such as short-cycling or excessive airflow obstructions. A cracked heat exchanger puts your family at risk and it must be replaced.
Other common repairs include burners that won’t burn gas to create the heat, a burnt-out blower motor, a faulty gas valve, or a flame sensor that doesn’t accurately sense the flame. Compressors, coils, and even faulty thermostats are components which require repairs by a qualified HVAC professional.
Our team is available 24/7 to answer your call and will get the heat going in your home as soon as possible.
We fully stock our trucks and maintain a strong inventory of furnaces, air handlers, heat pumps, and ductless units so your family is safe and comfortable.

Heating System Replacement & System Ratings
We encourage Cincinnati residents to consider a few factors when shopping for a heating system replacement. For example, understand the ratings system.
Furnace Ratings Use AFUE
For a new furnace, make sure you know its AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. Old heating systems may be as low as 58 to 70 percent AFUE. This means out of every dollar spent on heating utilities, such as gas, 58 to 70 cents is used to heat your home.
A few years ago, a federal regulation called for new furnaces to be a minimum of 80 percent AFUE. At Apollo Home, we offer a new gas furnace with as much as 98 percent AFUE. This means only two cents of every heating dollar exhausts out the flue. That’s incredible efficiency!
Heat Pumps Use HSPF Ratings
For heat pumps, the rating is known as HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. It gives homeowners an idea of how efficiently a heat pump heats a home over the span of a heating season. The rating minimum is currently 7.7, while anything between eight and ten is considered energy-efficient.
Ductless heat pumps balance heating and cooling needs with no need to connect to ductwork. They’re great for older homes, new additions, or when finishing spaces like attics, basements or garages. They can operate in a single room or connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor condenser. HSPF ranges go up to 14.2 while SEER can reach as high as 33.
Wi-Fi and Smart Thermostats: Nest
Finally, if you’d like even more control over your heating and cooling system, we install thermostats, including the popular Nest brand. These “smart” thermostats provide increased communication between your HVAC system and thermostat.
Some models, such as Nest from Apollo Home, allow remote temperature adjustments. With Wi-Fi access, Nest and other smart thermostats allow for incredibly specific programming.
After initial programming or “learning,” it independently adjusts comfort levels according to household routines. It also alerts you to possible HVAC malfunctions and provides usage reports.
How long does a furnace last?
A well-maintained furnace can last 10-15 years before needing replacement.
Do I really need a furnace tune-up every year?
Yes! Not only does a furnace tune-up improve the performance and efficiency of your furnace, but most manufacturer warranties require annual service to maintain the warranty.
How often should I replace my furnace filter?
It’s recommended to change typical 1-2 inch filters every three months for the highest system efficiency.
How do I know I need furnace repair services?
- Your system is making strange noises
- You experience lower heating levels
- You experience lower airflow
- Your system is short-cycling
- Your system isn’t starting

Indoor Air Quality Concerns During Cincinnati Winters
If you wake up in the morning thirsty or with a dry throat, your air may be dry. You may also find the air feels stale in your home. These are common indoor air quality issues, especially in winter.
Because we’ve sealed our homes to avoid energy loss, we have less ventilation and humidity in our air. Has an overnight guest ever mentioned it? It’s often noticeable when we sleep somewhere else and wake with sinus congestion or dry sinuses.
In addition, dry air causes itchy skin, static electricity, and increased vulnerability to airborne virus and bacteria particles and nose bleeds. At Apollo Home in Cincinnati, we install several solutions to indoor air quality issues. We offer various products including whole-house humidifiers.
In addition, if anyone in your home lives with asthma, allergies, COPD, cardiac conditions, or immunosuppressive illnesses, we offer whole-home filtration products such as air purifiers and media air cleaners. Airborne pollutants often aggravate these conditions.
Cleaner air is better for everyone, but if a household member has any of these conditions, air quality becomes even more important.
Finally, we also repair and replace ductwork. In older homes, ductwork eventually requires replacement due to the materials originally used. In other cases, there are leaks that take away from your heating system’s efficiency. This means higher utility bills.
Our team handles ductwork repair and replacement regardless of the situation. We’ve installed and repaired ductwork in garages, attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Let us take a look and test your ductwork.
Finance Options Available
HVAC replacement is a significant financial investment. While some are anticipated, many are not. To help deal with these unexpected purchases or simply to assist your household’s cash flow, we proudly offer finance options. We want Cincinnati customers to get the system they need right away.
Don’t compromise safety because of the cash expense. In many cases, a new system is safer as well as more reliably comfortable and energy-efficient. This means you’ll enjoy lower utility bills right away. You may even be eligible for rebates from your utility company when you upgrade efficiency. Ask our team about manufacturer promotions too!
Heating System Warranty
In general, warranties vary by manufacturer. Furnaces typically have two main warranty coverages. One is for the heat exchanger, which is the most expensive component to replace.
At Apollo Home, we offer furnaces with an incredible warranty. Coverages vary based on the model and often require timely registration.
Heat pumps and ductless mini-splits warranties are similar. Where the heat exchanger is the major component for furnace warranties, for heat pumps it’s the compressor. Most warranties are written plainly; however, if you have any questions please ask!
It’s possible to void a warranty with certain activities or lack thereof such as failure to maintain the equipment. Warranties may also become void if the equipment is installed, repaired, or serviced by an unqualified person.
