What is and how does a Backup Standby Generator Work?

It’s an ideal backup for your home in the event of a power outage. It gets installed outside your house (similar to an AC unit). It automatically starts and restores power in seconds — whether you’re home or away. An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) automatically transfers power from the utility to your generator in the event of a power outage. When utility power is restored, the ATS turns off your generator and returns your home’s power to the utility grid. A backup standby generator will power your home, including critical hard-wired systems such as AC, heat, sump pumps, well pumps, security systems and large appliances. It runs on your home’s natural or LP gas. It delivers high-quality consistent power — so it won’t harm your electronics.

Backup Generators Can Help In Many Ways

FOOD: During an outage, your food is the first thing to go. Keep your refrigerator and freezer running and have electricity to run your microwave and your electric range.

HVAC: Whether it’s the dead of winter or the dog days of summer, keeping your heating and cooling systems running keeps your family comfortable and your home protected.

WATER: Running water is a big deal — you need it for drinking, cleaning and flushing. On the other hand, if it’s running into your basement it’s a much bigger deal. If your home depends on well water or a sump pump, we keep faucets, toilets, showers, washing machine, sump pump and more running the way they should.

LIGHTS & MORE: Let there be light. Keep your lights and electricity functioning. Use lights in any room of your house, keep your garage door working, your clocks on and your security system powered.

COMMUNICATION: TV, tablet, computer. These things keep you connected to the world and what you love to do.

What is the difference between a portable generator and standby generator?

A portable generator is primarily for more temporary and smaller alternative power needs for a home than a standby generator.

A portable generator powers by plugging an electrical cord in the unit while a standby generator connects to your electrical panel.

A portable generator can only power a handful of appliances while standby generator can power everything in a home, including heating and cooling systems, water systems, lights, appliances and sensitive electronics.

A portable generator needs to be turned on by the homeowner while a standby generator comes on automatically in the event of a power outage.

A portable generator needs to be refueled with gasoline or diesel while a standby generator requires no refueling as it runs off of a continuous supply of LP or propane.

In the event of major storms and severe weather, portable generators often sell out quickly at home centers, while at the same time only providing a fraction of the power that a standby unit can provide.

Financial Benefits of Standby Backup Generators

Lower Your Homeowners Insurance Rate – Home standby backup generators keep a home humming. Insurers know when your house’s lights and security system are on, it’s less likely you’ll be making a home theft claim. Consequently, many insurance agencies view standby generators as a theft prevention investment, which can reduce your homeowner’s insurance rate.

Prevent Storm Damage & Power Outage Costs – Standby generators prevent unexpected repair or losses when a home sits without power. Basement flooding, mold damage, burst or frozen pipes, food spoilage, and alternative shelter can cost you thousands of dollars during power outages.

Increase Your Home Value – Property values increase for homes with a standby generator system. A recent study by Remodeling Magazine showed standby generators increase home resale values by 52.7 percent of the cost of the generator system.
