Power Rodding Or Hydro Jetting: Finding The Best Solution For Your Home Plumbing Needs
Although many drain blockages can be resolved with home remedies such over-the-counter products like Liquid-Plumr and cable augers (typically called snakes), sometimes an issue is significant enough to warrant power rodding or hydro jetting. These are two of the most powerful tools in an expert’s arsenal and can fix very stubborn blockages.
Power rodding and hydro jetting
If a clogged drain is caused by something near the top of a drainage system, conventional methods like chemicals and augers typically fit the bill. But over the years, especially in houses built before the 1980s, blockages can occur deep in a drainage system, too far down for the traditional remedies. This is where technology steps in.
Powered by an electric motor, power rodding employs a rigid steel cable that literally shatters through the material that’s blocking a drain. Hydro jetting uses an extremely high concentration of water to push the material through a system. Both of these advancements have dramatically changed the field of plumbing, allowing plumbing experts to resolve issues that used to take a great deal of time and effort to fix.
The professional choice
If you have a tough blockage that requires expert assistance, your plumbing professional may use one of these advances. The question is: Which one will he choose?
The answer depends on the plumber — as well as the issue itself. Power rodding has been around longer that hydro jetting, and many professionals still use it. Hydro jetting is the newer option. It can do the same job but doesn’t involve a metal cable grinding inside your pipes. A number of plumbers use hydro jetting exclusively, but many others use both. If you’re in need of a plumber, talk with him about the method he intends to use and his reasons for making that specific choice.
