Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician and Installer Jobs Projected to Grow by 28%
While other industries may be struggling to grow their employee count, the HVAC and refrigeration industries has estimated to grow 28% from 2008-2018, much faster than the average for all other occupations.
A recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, projects that employment will rise from 308,200 in 2008 to 394,800 in 2018 for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers. This begs the question, “Where are all the mechanics and installers going to come from? Are there more individuals considering a career in HVAC and refrigeration now than before?” In my recent discussions with area trade school professors that’s not the case. Enrollment at trade schools is steady at best.
We’ve come a long way in the HVAC industry and now require more stringent knowledge, education and training about the equipment, processes and procedures. Much of that is due to the technology being incorporated onto many of the units and the visions of today’s entrepreneurial leaders.
I see the current dilemma relating to perception. We need to change the thoughts of career counselors and parents, as well as encourage the professionals in the HVAC industry to share more about what a great career they are experiencing. It’s up to us to excite the next generation to explore a career in HVAC. The future is bright, so spread the word to those graduating from high school to consider a career in the HVAC industry!
