As summer is winding down and football season begins, dehumidifiers can continue to assist in your heating and cooling comfort. As we transition from summer to fall In the Greater Cincinnati region, we enjoy a variety of weather. At Apollo Home, we are prepared for any and all of it.
Why High Humidity Feels Hotter
Humidity comes from various sources. Inside the home, we create it through condensation every time we cook, shower, and clean clothes. Condensation on the windows or worst case, drips on the walls, indicate a humidity problem. Essentially, the amount of moisture in the home is high. When we discuss heating and cooling, we talk about the extraction of moisture from the air. Removing moisture makes the air feel cooler. Your air conditioner doesn’t explicitly “cool” the air. It removes heat and moisture from the air, leaving the air feeling cooler. The excess heat and moisture are vented outside. When we’re outdoors, we talk about humidity when we talk about how hot it feels. This is a misunderstanding, in some ways. When most people refer to the humidity, they are actually responding to the amount of moisture in the air or dew point. Confused? The dew point is the temperature at which the air is saturated with water vapor, or 100 percent relative humidity. When the moisture saturation level is high, it becomes more difficult for our bodies to sweat effectively. The rate at which water or perspiration evaporates is relative to the amount of water currently in the air. On humid days, when the air has a high water saturation, sweat evaporates slowly. On dry days, perspiration evaporates quickly.
How Does a Dehumidifier Work?
So, as our late summer/early fall weather fluctuates, we need our heating and air systems to adapt to the moisture levels. A dehumidifier helps your HVAC system extract more moisture from the conditioned air. Similar to a vacuum, it takes air in from your home’s rooms, removes the moisture, and blows it into the room again. A reservoir collects the water and must be emptied or drained.
What Are the Benefits of a Dehumidifier?
Too much humidity can be more troublesome than just a muggy or clammy feeling. When the humidity level in a home is higher than 60 percent, it contributes to the growth of mold, mildew, and dust mites. Mold and mildew can damage your home and possessions. All three are common allergy triggers and can aggravate those who live with asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions. When you control the amount of humidity in the home with a dehumidifier, you keep these allergens in check.
