Don’t Let Spring Showers Encourage Mold Growth in Your Cincinnati Home
With spring comes the blossoming of wildflowers, warmer days and, of course, spring rains. Spring rain can be very refreshing, but it can also wreak havoc on your home if you’re not properly prepared. Moisture from those spring rains can get into your home through air leaks and cause mold growth.
There are a number of ways to keep your home safe from mold:
- Make sure that all air leaks are sealed properly. You can do this on your own if the air leaks are few and small. Caulking is a great item to help seal up air leaks around windows and house access points, like the dryer vent.
- The moisture in your home can be reduced through proper ventilation. Vents placed in the attic should be kept clear of any debris. After using the shower or washing dishes, open a window so the moisture can make it outside or turn on the exhaust fan to ventilate the room. Also make sure dryer vent hoses lead outside and away from the home.
- Firewood should be stored outside. Firewood is naturally moist and can be a breeding ground for bugs and fungus. Try to cycle through firewood to keep it dry.
If you’ve found mold growth in your home, call an HVAC professional. A musty odor coming from walls or ceilings could be a good indication that there’s mold present. Discoloration of walls, floor joints or any other building materials could also indicate mold growth. If there was a large amount of water damage from busted pipes or a leaky roof, you may want to keep a close eye out for mold.
