Air Conditioning Problems? Before You Call A Pro, Try These 3 Troubleshooting Tips
Air conditioning problems can put a big damper on your summertime comfort. Whether you experience a total system breakdown or just can’t get your rooms cool enough, fixing the problem quickly is always a priority. Some of the air conditioning problems you might experience include:
- Insufficient airflow: If there is not enough cool air coming out of your supply registers, check the air filter, and replace it if it’s dirty. Also check for disconnected or blocked ducts, and make sure your registers are open and unobstructed. If none of these solutions work, call an HVAC expert.
- High humidity levels: Your air conditioner will naturally remove humidity from your indoor air, but if you notice an increase in humidity levels, your air conditioning may have developed a problem. Your contractor may recommend changes to your ductwork, optimizing airflow or adding a dehumidification system. If you have consistently high humidity levels, it could be because your air conditioner is too large. An oversized unit will cycle on and off more frequently, not allowing enough time for moisture to be removed. Consider upgrading, especially if you have an older cooling system.
- System failure: If your air conditioner won’t even turn on, it’s possible that there is a problem with the electrical system. But it could also be something that’s easily fixed. First, make sure the unit is on, that the thermostat is set on the cooling mode, and the setting is low enough. Make sure your breaker isn’t tripped, or you haven’t blown a fuse. If it still doesn’t turn on, call a professional to check for electrical problems.
One of the best ways to avoid air conditioning problems is to invest in an annual maintenance plan. Getting a tune-up at the beginning of each cooling season can help you prevent problems before they start.
