How is AI Connected to Your HVAC System?

December 26, 2018

Modern technological advances continue to quickly evolve, many of which improve basic mechanicals like an HVAC system. Thanks to high-tech gadgets and appliances, these include several smart HVAC system innovations via artificial intelligence.

This intelligence connects homes to comfort and convenience. Take advantage of the latest in HVAC system technologies from Apollo Home to boost your homeโ€™s comfort level.

What Makes an HVAC System โ€˜Smartโ€™

So what exactly, makes an HVAC system โ€˜smartโ€™? The technology typically leverages Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and sensors to connect systems via hubs. Examples include ย Amazon Alexa, Google Home or a similar proprietary smart home device.

Either you can set the system to run automatically in the background of your life, or you can manually control your settings via a smartphone app.

Check out and consider having any of the below types of smart devices added to your homeโ€™s HVAC system.

Smart Thermostats Work with Your HVAC System

Smart thermostats like the ones Nest offers are one of the more well-known advancements in recent smart HVAC system technology. Are you familiar with all their capabilities?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as recently as 2015,ย 41 percent of U.S. homes had a programmable thermostat. They also found less than 29 percent actually programmed it.

These common features of smart thermostats may inspire you to install a smart thermostat in your home. Or, if you already have one installed, maybe they will inspire you to program yours:

  • Geofencing, which uses global positioning system (GPS) or radio frequency identification (RFID) to define geographic boundaries and create virtual barriers. These allow you to set up triggers to send alerts when a device enters or exits. For example, when you enter a radius around your home, the thermostat receives an alert and activates the HVAC system.
  • Upstaging and downstaging, which automatically initiates stages of heating or cooling. Actions are based on the difference between your desired temperature and your homeโ€™s current temperature.
  • Free cooling, if you have a ventilator installed in your home. This detects when outside temperatures are cooler than inside air. It then uses the outside air to cool your home instead of running the air conditioner.

Smart Vents

Another type of smart home technology to enhance your homeโ€™s HVAC system, smart vents help you lower energy consumption by automatically closing vents in unused spaces.

Smart vents act as replacements to your homeโ€™s current stationary vents. Unlike their traditional counterparts you manually move to control your homeโ€™s room-to-room airflow, smart vents have sensors which recognize a room is occupied.

They can then set the temperature, humidity, and air circulation room-by-room and discern problems such as blocked vents.

Much like smart thermostats, smart vents can pair with your smartphone for wireless controls and alerts using a smart home hub. Many smart vents are available on the market, and can often work together with other types of smart HVAC devices.

The Future of HVAC System AI

HVAC system manufacturers constantly experiment with automation and technological innovations in other home comfort equipment.

For example, smart humidification, dehumidification, and ventilation equipment come equipped with remote sensing capabilities, smartphone controls, and alerts to monitor your homeโ€™s indoor air quality factors.

In the future, industry experts predict someday HVAC systems could tie into other systems in your home, making adjustments based on the status of the rest of the house.

With technological advancements happening every day, who knows what the future will hold for smart HVAC systems!
