High-Efficiency Toilets Are The Better Way To Flush

March 5, 2013

Today, homeowners have many options when it comes to making their homes more energy efficient. Everything from solar panels to Energy Star-rated appliances to light bulbs can reduce your carbon footprint and save you significant amounts of money.

Water usage can also be decreased with things like high-efficiency toilets. To really boost your homeโ€™s eco-friendly status, learn about how effective such toilets are, how they work and what options are available.

Benefits of high-efficiency toilets
Toilets that are considered highly efficient have numerous benefits that extend beyond their ability to cut back your homeโ€™s monthly expenses. The strain on water resources and infrastructure is reduced, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The more water usage decreases, the more the energy required to treat and transport water is decreased. There is a greater ability to deal with drought conditions and a water crisis can be better prevented in areas where the residents favor high-efficiency toilets.

Different types of toilets

  • Pressure-assist toilets: This system compresses air inside its pressure tank, using the pressure from the water supply line while it fills up with water. When flushed, the compressed air forces the water into the bowl.
  • Single-flush toilets: In new homes and for bathroom remodel jobs, single-flush toilets are usually required by law. This type is effective and uses only 1.6 gallons of water per flush, compared to the 7 gallons of water per flush that is used with many older toilets.
  • Dual-flush toilets: Dual-flush toilets allow you to use less water by selecting when to flush solids (with 1.6 gallons of water), and when to flush liquids (with about half that amount of water).
