UV Lights: How They Work to Clean the Air Within HVAC Systems

Working hand-in-hand with your HVAC unit
As you’re probably aware, your heating and cooling equipment draws air from inside your home, sends it through your ducts and then pushes the newly conditioned air back through your house. With this air comes whatever microorganisms are floating around inside it. When these particles pass by UV lights, which can be installed at the system’s in-duct or evaporator coil, they’re eliminated.
How the lights work
Most organisms are affected by ultraviolet radiation to some degree. When microorganisms are exposed to the lights you’ve installed with your heating or cooling equipment, their molecular structure — the very bonds that hold them together — quickly breaks down. If you’re worried about exposure to the UV lights yourself, don’t be. These lights are located so as to keep them away from you and your family.
What the lights fight against
At any given time, there are hundreds, even thousands, of microorganisms floating around the air of your greater Cincinnati area home. These consist of mold spores, bacteria, viruses, pollen and a number of other particles. If left untreated, these airborne menaces will find their way into your lungs and may cause serious respiratory problems. In fact, allergy and asthma sufferers must exercise caution, as the microorganisms can cause their health issues to flare up. UV lights are great at clearing your air of such dangerous elements.
