High Efficiency A/C: How to Maintain Peak Performance

The hot and humid summers in Cincinnati are more bearable when your home is equipped with a high efficiency A/C system. To ensure that your home stays cool and comfy all summer long, you need your cooling system running at its peak level.

To ensure that your system is operating at its peak, there are four factors that should be in place.

What Factors Affect Your Cooling System’s Peak Performance?

Various factors can affect the performance of your high efficiency A/C system. Weather is a factor. The same system installed in a northern climate will use less energy to keep a home cool than a system installed in a southern climate. You can’t control Mother Nature. However, the four factors you can control to assure your cooling system performs at its peak include:

  • Airflow – You need to make sure air properly flows through your system’s evaporator. Improper airflow can result in a reduction in your system’s performance. As a result, you’ll use more energy to cool your home. Improper airflow can reduce your energy use by as much as 10 percent.
  • Refrigerant charge -The effects of improper refrigerant charge vary from system to system and from one set of operating conditions to another. However, proper refrigerant charge will insure proper dehumidification of your home, adequate removal of heat inside your home and transfer of heat out, and decreased energy use.
  • Tight ducts – When you have tightly sealed ducts, you insure that the system’s total cooling capacity is not lost, that clean conditioned air flows throughout your home and that less energy is used to cool your home.
  • Size of unit – Contractors may oversize a system because it’ll reduce service calls. However, having a system that’s too big can increase energy usage by 9 percent, create hot spots, and leave humidity in the air.

"We scheduled an estimate AND a tune-up. We knew something was wrong with our furnace, but hoped we could make it through the rest of the season.
