How does HEPA filtration work?

HEPA, or high efficiency particulate air filtration, uses a mechanical type of air filter to remove small, unwanted particles from the air. True HEPA filters are rated according to their filtration capabilities using MERV, or minimum efficiency reporting values. MERV ratings typically run from 1 to 16, with 16 being a superior rating, however HEPA filters are very effective with some rated as high as 20. True HEPA filters with MERV ratings of 17 to 19 remove 99 percent of particles 0.3 micron and larger from the air. True HEPA filters meet certain standards, while filters labeled “HEPA type” could mean anything.

HEPA filters improve indoor air quality and reduce allergy and asthma symptoms by removing unwanted particles from the air such as dust, mold, pollen, viruses, bacteria and odors.

Is there anything a HEPA filter can’t do?

  • HEPA filters cannot trap gases. In order to trap gases, an activated carbon filter must be combined with your HEPA filter.
  • HEPA filters do not kill bacteria and viruses. Though they do trap some, if you would like to kill bacteria and viruses, add a UV light to your HEPA filter.
  • Filters will not work properly if they’re not changed when needed, typically at least once or twice a year to prevent redistribution of harmful particles.

"We scheduled an estimate AND a tune-up. We knew something was wrong with our furnace, but hoped we could make it through the rest of the season. Upon telling Bill what our furnace was doing, he warned us immediately what the possible outcome was going to be; a cracked heat exchanger. He watched the flames roll backward, tested carbon monoxide levels, which were so high they meter’s last reading was 5,600 before saying “high”. He immediately shut it down, tagged it, and explained that with levels that high and children in our home he wanted off right away.
