The Advantages a Ductless Heat Pump Can Bring to Your Cincinnati Home
Although centrally installed heat pumps are the norm in most situations, sometimes the advantages of a ductless heat pump make it the best choice. As the name implies, ductless systems don’t require a network of ducts to deliver conditioned air, making them suitable for home additions, remodeling, or otherwise hard-to-condition areas inside the home.
Ductless heat pumps work just like central heat pumps, moving heat from one place to another year-round via a reversing valve. In the summer, the pump takes heat outside and in the winter, it moves it in through the refrigerant.
Advantages of a Ductless Heat Pump
- No need for ductwork – The two major components of a ductless heat pump are the outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler. A narrow conduit carries the refrigerant, condensate drain and power that connects the two. The air handler blows air directly into the room, eliminating all the ductwork leaks associated with central systems, as well as thermal loses as the air blows through the ducts.
- High energy efficiency – These systems must meet all the energy efficiency requirements that central heat pumps do. The minimum seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) stands at 13 and its heating season performance factor (HSPF) must be 7.7. The air handler also has its own thermostat for individualized comfort.
- Easy installation – One of the biggest advantages of a ductless heat pump is its easy installation compared to central units. The factory installs the refrigerant, and since it doesn’t require ductwork, putting one in is as easy as locating the condenser, placing the air handler and connecting the conduit to both.
- Security – Unlike wall or window units that can be removed from the outside for entry into your home, the hole for the connecting conduit is seldom more than a few inches in diameter, making ingress impossible.
