Improve Air Conditioning Efficiency in Your Cincy Home With These Tips
The cooling season is in full swing in greater Cincinnati, and it’s only going to get hotter from here. If you’re looking for ways to improve air conditioning efficiency to increase comfort and lower energy bills, it’s time to make a few improvements in both your home and with its HVAC system. These tips can help you save money, lower your carbon footprint, prevent common A/C problems and take a load off the system for better performance.
Annual Tuneup
If you haven’t scheduled your annual A/C tuneup, now’s the time to do it. A tuneup by a qualified professional will include lubricating moving parts, removing dust from essential components and tightening connections and belts for greater efficiency. Tackling this as preventive maintenance will ensure fewer problems during the summer, a longer operating life and lower utility bills.
DIY Maintenance
While an annual tuneup will improve air conditioning efficiency, there are a few monthly tasks you should perform to maintain it throughout the summer.
- Inspect the air filter monthly and replace it when it’s caked with dust. A dirty filter is a major cause of A/C failure. It also reduces efficiency, causes damage to essential components and negatively impacts your indoor air quality.
- Hose down the outdoor unit to remove debris from the metal openings, which can inhibit heat transfer. Pull any weeds within two feet of the unit.
- Vacuum and dust around the indoor unit to prevent dust buildup inside the system.
Seal Air Leaks
Air leaks in your home make the air conditioner work over time to replace lost air and cool incoming warm air. Seal around doors and windows with caulk, and install weatherstripping between door and window components that move.
Use Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans can considerably improve home comfort. Turn up the thermostat a couple of degrees and use ceiling fans in occupied rooms to help you feel cooler.
