Ductless Heating and Cooling System Maintenance
Ductless HVAC systems (or mini-split technology) are generally found in home renovations and add-ons as it is more cost effective then redoing and extending the existing ductwork. Ductless heating and cooling systems are also more energy efficient as other systems can lose 20-30 percent of your system’s conditioned air in the ducts.
A ductless heat pump or air conditioner typically consists of a wall-mounted indoor unit combined with an outside compressor and would be installed instead of a window AC unit or floorboard heating. Unlike window units, ductless units require only a small hole to be drilled into the wall, making them less vulnerable to air leakage and security breaches. They’re also less visible and audible.
With any kind of system, it is best to have semi-annual preventive maintenance on your system to prevent the cost of a complete overhaul if something catastrophic goes wrong.
One of the easiest prevention methods for your ductless heating and cooling system is to clean the filters. Clean these monthly or more frequently if you have pets or a smoker in your household as this will accelerate clogs in the filter. If you notice your system sounds a little louder than usual it could be a clogged filter. If that doesn’t seem to help, call a technician to inspect the heating and cooling unit.
It’s also easy to forget to give your systems enough space. It might be tempting to rearrange furniture to help hide your ductless heating and cooling system, but by making it less visible you’re also blocking the air flow it needs to continue running properly and efficiently. Greater Cincinnati also gets some serious winter weather, so during the winter months be sure to check your outdoor system for ice buildup. You might be surprised how much this can affect your ductless heating and cooling system. You can gently remove it yourself or call a professional to come clean it so the ice does not damage the system and keep it working at its most energy efficient level. While filter cleaning is simple, there are components of your system that are best left to the professionals such as: maintaining the coils, removing difficult to reach debris, making sure the system continues to be securely mounted and that all the electrical components are still in good shape.
