Are you planning on escaping the cold of Cincinnati to a warmer climate at some point this winter? While you are away it is still important to think about energy efficiency at home. Not only will this be good for the planet, but you will likely notice that you save some money as well.
One important step is unplugging all of the unnecessary appliances in your home. Even if you turn your cable box, computer and other appliances off, they will still suck up power as long as they are plugged in.
It is also important to remember to turn your thermostat down to about 55 or 60 degrees. This will keep your house warm enough that things will not freeze. It’s also amazing how much 5 to 10 degrees will save you in energy costs.
It is now possible to control your thermostat while you are away or set it to perform in a certain way. For example, there is much that you can do with a programmable thermostat. You can set it to run at a certain temperature starting on a particular day and then have it warm up on the day that you are returning home. If the thermostat is WiFi enabled you can control it with an app on your phone or tablet. You could then keep an eye on the temperature at home and set your thermostat daily at the necessary temperature.
