Now that outside temperatures are getting lower, it’s time to take a serious look at how you can reduce heating costs in your Greater Cincinnati area home. Here are four strategies that we recommend.
Lower Your Thermostat
The first thing you should do in order to reduce heating costs is to pay attention to your thermostat. Keep in mind that for every degree you lower the thermostat, your costs will decrease by as much as 3 percent. The installation of a programmable thermostat can also help you get your heating needs under control, and the unit will pay for itself in about a year.
Decrease Your Water Heater Temperature
Many homeowners don’t realize that the energy used to heat your water accounts for approximately 14 percent of your heating bill. Most water heaters go up to 140 degrees, but no one takes a shower at that temperature. Same goes for washing your dishes and clothes — you simply don’t need your water to be that hot. Decrease the water heater temperature to 120 degrees and you’ll never know the difference.
Seal Air Leaks
Cracks and crevices around your doors and windows are notorious for adding to your heating costs each month. These can be sealed with weatherstripping or caulk. Electrical outlets are also a source of air leakage and often go unnoticed. To fix this problem, all you need to do is purchase a set of child-proof plastic plugs and insert them into any outlets that are not in use.
When you don’t have enough insulation in your home, the heat will escape while the cold sneaks its way inside. If you plan on adding insulation yourself, you can use this insulation calculator from the Department of Energy. You can also consult a professional technician who can advise you on what you need for the best results.
