Air Conditioner Replacement: What to Look for With Central A/C | Blog
Is air conditioner replacement on your list of things that need to get done before it starts getting hot this summer? There are a few things that you need to know before you have this type of project started.
To maximize your ongoing savings, look for the most energy-efficient air conditioner possible. There are two main types of air conditioning units for you to choose from: the split system and the package system. The split system has the condenser and compressor typically mounted on a slab next to the house, while the package system has everything in a single unit and is normally mounted on the roof. Which type you choose will depend on whether or not your house is currently equipped with an air conditioner or central heating, as one of the major costs of installation can be the ductwork required.
Factors affecting component selection
- Age – If your house already has an air conditioner that isn’t working properly, your air conditioner replacement choice may be decided by how old your current unit is, since today’s newer models use a different type of refrigerant that may not be compatible. To make sure you purchase the correct components, check with your local heating and cooling contractor for guidance.
- Size – When it comes to air conditioners, size really matters. A unit that’s too small won’t be able to properly cool the house, while a unit that’s too big won’t be able to remove all of the humidity from the house. Even with a correctly-sized unit, it still needs to be properly located and the ductwork needs to be checked, or you’ll just be throwing money out the windows when it’s in use.
