Don’t Neglect Ductless Mini-Split Maintenance | Blog
To prevent summer cooling bills from getting out of hand and to maintain maximum zoned comfort in your home, make sure you don’t neglect ductless mini-split maintenance this year.
Use these preventive care tips when you’re tidying the yard and cleaning around your home, and schedule professional preventive maintenance with your HVAC technician to keep your ductless system, and other home comfort systems, in top shape.
Easy care tips
Like conventional air source heat pumps and A/C systems, ductless mini splits need free airflow across the indoor evaporator coils (inside the air handlers) and the outside condenser coil (in the outside cabinet). Fortunately, maintaining free airflow for your system involves simple steps:
- Remove and clean the air filters located in the air handlers once a month during peak usage. Allow the filters to thoroughly dry before reinserting.
- Carefully remove the cover or panel to access the indoor air quality (IAQ) components and evaporator. Use the brush extension of the vacuum to clean these components. (Your ductless mini split will need to be turned off for about one hour to allow the evaporator coil to return near room temperature. Otherwise, it is extremely cold and perhaps wet with condensation.)
- Check the area around the outside cabinet for anything that obstructs free airflow. This could include vegetation, debris stuck to the cabinet, objects propped against or near the cabinet and even grass clippings that may have accumulated inside the cabinet. (If you use your ductless mini split for the heating months, make sure snow and ice are cleared away.)
Professional preventive maintenance
Your certified HVAC technician performs the same care tips which are on your DIY list, as well as tasks related to electrical components, refrigerant charge, the drainage system, system diagnostics and more. Each of these elements relies on the efficient function of the next for delivering optimal system performance and to avoid costly malfunctions, such as compressor wear or water leakage inside walls from a clogged drain line.
