What to Look for in an HVAC Service Agreement

When evaluating your options for an HVAC service agreement, it is important to first consider the age of your system and how handy you are to do some of the maintenance yourself.  If your system is older than 6 years and you do not plan to perform maintenance on your own, it is worthwhile to invest in a service agreement.

A good HVAC service agreement will help to maintain the life and efficiency of your furnace and air conditioner.  Regular maintenance means a cleaner, more energy efficient system, fewer service calls and lower monthly utility bills.

Most companies offer service agreements at various levels, starting with the most basic plan.  Consider these basic agreement tips to make sure you choose the agreement that is right for you (and fits your budget):

  • Some features are extended including no charge or discounted service calls, deals on new equipment  and priority service should you have an emergency. Pick the service level that is right for you and your needs.
  • Evaluate each plan thoroughly so you know what exactly to expect from the agreement. Read the fine print.
  • Ask for a detailed explanation of what the company’s regular check-ups include and to know what repair services are covered and what’s not.
  • Make sure the plan you choose covers at least a percentage of repairs based on certain warranty restrictions.

Although you hope the service agreement is never needed for emergency service, it is nice to know you have the benefit should something go wrong.  And while many HVAC parts are covered under the manufacturer’s warranty, basic preventative maintenance is important to extend the life of those parts and ensure the energy efficiency of the unit.

"We scheduled an estimate AND a tune-up. We knew something was wrong with our furnace, but hoped we could make it through the rest of the season.
