Common Water Tank Heater Questions

When should I replace my tank water heater?

Most water heaters have a life expectancy of 8 to 12 years. Water heaters account for a significant amount of energy use in your home and can be as much as 25 percent of a home’s energy use. As they age, they become less efficient and increase utility bills. The older your water heater gets, the less efficient it is, and the more apt it is to fail. If your water heater is nearing the end of its serviceable life, it is time to start considering replacement options to increase efficiency and minimize downtime between water heaters. 

Why is my water heater leaking?

If you notice water surrounding your tank, you may have a crack in your internal tank. If this is the case, your water heater must be replaced. If the leak comes from the top, or you have a malfunctioning fitting or plumbing component, these can be quick repairs. 

Why is my water heater making strange noises?

If you hear odd or high-pitched sounds from your water heater, it’s likely due to high incoming water pressure. A plumber should check immediately to ensure your pressure relief safety valve works. If too much pressure builds up in your tank, it can lead to cracks or a burst tank (though rare). 

Why does my hot water run out so quickly?

The older your water tank gets, the less efficiently it operates. However, sediment buildup inside the tank is the most common culprit to a hot water shortage. The minerals in the water build up inside your tank and decrease how much water your tank can hold. We recommend draining and flushing your tank regularly (at least annually) to eliminate sediment buildup. 

How long does a water tank take to heat up fully?

The time varies from model to model, but it will typically take 45 minutes to an hour to fully heat the water inside.

"We scheduled an estimate AND a tune-up. We knew something was wrong with our furnace, but hoped we could make it through the rest of the season.
