1. Professional Inspection

2. Battery Back Up?

All sump pumps run from a GFCI electrical connection. Always make sure it’s plugged in and in good working order.  But, if summer storms knock out power, know that a smart upgrade is a Sump Pump equipped with battery back up.  A small upgrade can pay dividends and prevent disaster during electrical outages.

3. DIY Sump Pump Care

As a homeowner, there are safeguards you can employ to make sure your sump pump continues to function properly:

Visually inspect the sump pump to be sure it is upright and not tilted. Over time, a sump pump can get off-center due to the vibrations of usage.

Clean the grate at the bottom of the sump pump pit by removing the submersible pump. Clear out dirt and debris that can build up at the grate and in the outlet pipes that dispense the water from the sump pump to the exterior of the home.

Run a manual test of your sump pump by pouring about five gallons of water into the sump pump pit. Make sure it automatically triggers its running cycle.

Outside inspection to make sure the water flows in a steady pace and that the pipes are taking that water at least 20 feet from your home’s foundation.
