Make the Most of Your Cincy Home’s Indoor Air Quality With These Pointers

post img It’s true: pollution is a major problem. But what you might not know is that the air inside your home may be more toxic than the air outside is. Experts now believe that pollution is typically far worse in the average American household than it is outdoors. The rise in residential air sealing has played a large role in this switch. Homes are now so airtight that more contaminants are getting locked in. Air sealing is a smart, energy-saving thing to do, but there are steps you should take to counter the negative effects that can arise from the lack of adequate ventilation. The good news is that you can improve indoor air quality by following some relatively easy and low-cost steps. Learn how to clean up the air in your home today, so you can rest assured that it’s a healthy place for your loved ones to be.

How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

  1. Ventilate the kitchen, bathrooms, central vacuum cleaners and laundry room directly to the outdoors.
  2. Open windows when you use pollutants such as conventional cleaning products.
  3. Install a whole-house ventilation system to move more contaminants out of your home.
  4. Ventilate fireplaces and wood stoves, and be sure outdoor intakes and doors are tight.
  5. Store pesticides, paints, solvents and other toxic or volatile compounds in an outdoor storage container or in your garage.
  6. Try not to have unvented combustion sources indoors like barbecues, vent-free heaters, decorative combustion appliances and cigarette smoke anywhere near your home.
  7. Use a high quality air filter in your HVAC system to better prevent dust, germs and other contaminants from entering the ductwork.
  8. Use condensing, sealed-combustion or power-vented water heaters and furnaces. Test natural-draft applications for adequate ventilation, if they must be used, and keep them outside.
  9. Install an air cleaner to help remove more pollutants in your home.
