Straightforward Tips to Improve the Indoor Air Quality of Your Ohio Home

When you consider that the quality of the air inside most homes is more polluted than outside, it’s no wonder Cincinnati residents are looking for solutions to the problem. Here are some great tips to help improve indoor air quality in your home and that breathe easier.

  • Control humidity levels – Ideally, indoor levels should fall between 30 and 50 percent, as both dust mites and mold thrive in moist environments. During the summer months, the A/C can help control the humidity and reduce allergens, as can a whole-house dehumidifier.
  • Maintain your HVAC equipment – Schedule preventive maintenance in the spring and fall to keep your system clean, efficient and in good working order. Equipment that’s malfunctioning or neglected can harbor mold, dust and bacteria that will continue to circulate throughout your home each time you turn it on.
  • Keep up with air filter changes – Prolong the life of the HVAC system and improve indoor air quality through regular, monthly air filter changes, particularly during peak heating or cooling season.
  • Skip the fragrance – Opt for unscented cleaning products, with far less volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) than their scented counterparts. These synthetic fragrances contain an abundance of chemicals that are released in to and remain in your indoor air.
  • Ventilate – New and improved building materials and practices have contributed to the tighter homes of today, where little to no air exchange occurs. A whole-house ventilation system can help by increasing the air circulation throughout your home, bringing in fresh air from outside and removing stale air from indoors.
  • Test for radon – This radioactive gas occurs in nature. As the uranium found in most soil types decays, it can find its way in to your home through cracks in the foundation. Small levels have also been found in granite countertop material, and since testing is quick, easy and inexpensive, it’s a small investment for the health and safety of your family.
