Give Air Conditioners a Break
Dehumidifiers and ductless air conditioners share the load
Summer brings heat and humidity, easily overtaxing your cooling system. Luckily, HVAC contractors like Cincinnati’s Apollo Home are ready to help homeowners with their air conditioners and apply solutions.
To prevent air conditioners from excess wear and tear, try a dehumidifier, a ceiling fan, or ductless air conditioners.
Dehumidifiers Remove the Feeling of Heat
While a high temperature makes you feel hot, the sense of real discomfort is the humidity. When people describe the air as “muggy,” it’s because the moisture saturation in the air is above normal.
Cincinnati is situated on the river, adding to the relative humidity in the air. To combat this in your home, install a dehumidifier. Air conditioners remove some moisture from the air during the cooling process. Dehumidifiers remove even more, so your AC unit doesn’t have to work as hard.
Ideally, indoor humidity levels measure between 30 – 50 percent. Above 55 – 60 percent, and your home is vulnerable to mold and mildew. Dust mites also multiply at a higher humidity level. All of these trigger allergies and aggravate respiratory conditions.
Install a dehumidifier and control the level of humidity in your home.
Ceiling Fans Keep Air Moving
Ceiling fans can’t “condition” the air, of course. They make you feel “cooler” by providing a bit of a wind chill. Also, they pull warm air up toward the ceiling, if set correctly. Reverse the direction in the winter to “push” the rising warm air back down to the living space.
According to Energystar.gov, Energy Star-rated fans are 40 percent more efficient than traditional fan/light units. They can lower the feel of a room’s temperature by eight degrees. This allows you raise the thermostat. When air conditioners run less, utility bills go down.
Ductless Air Conditioners Save the Day
These quiet and efficient cooling units are all over European and Asian homes. A serious upgrade from the noisy window units, ductless air conditioners mount on the wall or near the ceiling. Use a remote control for convenience. Installation is quick, easy, and secure. It only requires a three-inch hole to connect the refrigerant lines between the inside and outside units.
