The Expertise That Stands Behind The NATE Logo
The NATE logo is a useful designation to look for when you’re choosing an HVAC contractor to do an installation, service or repair.
North American Technician Excellence is a nonprofit organization created to promote the skill of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians nationwide. Further, it’s an organization supported by multiple entities in the HVAC industry, including manufacturers, utility companies and contractors. Here’s why NATE certification is something you should pay attention to when you need someone to work on your home-comfort investments.
NATE testing is rigorous
Technicians may choose which NATE tests to take from the program’s Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise. A technician can choose to certify/test in installation or service, and there’s a separate NATE for senior-level technicians, too. Technicians must first pass a core exam and then a specialty exam.
NATE technicians specialize
Homeowners benefit from using a NATE-certified technician because it’s possible to choose one with a specialty that matches the work to be done. Specialty areas range from air conditioning to air distribution, heat pumps to furnaces and hydronics to refrigeration. If you need your heating system serviced, work with a technician who holds that specialty. It’s as simple as that.
NATE standards are uniform across the nation
The value of the NATE logo and the certification program lies in its uniform testing standards. This, in fact, is the purpose that drove the formation of the organization. Other manufacturers train and then test technicians, but it benefits them to pass technicians. It reflects well on their companies. NATE, however, doesn’t benefit from certifying technicians, and it doesn’t train them either. The tests are designed to cover the day-to-day knowledge a technician should have, based on scenarios that he encounters in the field. By certifying technicians, NATE knows they hold the necessary knowledge to service and install equipment.
