Improve Attic Insulation and the Efficiency of Your Home
When it comes to saving money on your energy bills, you must be as energy efficient as possible. The attic loses a lot of your home’s heat, and these cold Cincinnati evenings can bring a big chill. You can improve attic insulation and turn this DIY project into a major energy saver.
Sealing Air Leaks
Air leaks can occur in many different places in the attic. Dirty insulation is a great indication that air is leaking through. Check around recessed lighting, holes for plumbing or wiring, dropped soffits that open into the attic, and holes around the furnace flue or ducts. These attic air leaks should be plugged first with appropriate caulking or insulation.
Adding Attic Insulation
The benefits of adding insulation to the attic can make a significant impact, especially if you’re noticing that your heating and cooling bills are high. You’ll also notice that the temperature throughout the home will be maintained.
Make sure to always use protective gear, have appropriate lighting and use boards to walk on or kneel on when necessary. You’ll need to have a tape measure, utility knife and sheet metal scissors or a straight edge to use for cutting materials.
- Choose your insulation type. You can use loose fill, fiberglass batts or fiberglass blankets, regardless of which type already exists in your attic. Make sure you select the best R-value for your geographic area.
- Lay the fiberglass insulation rolls in layers that are perpendicular to the joists.
- Keep insulation away from soffit vents or recessed lighting. Create barriers with wire mesh or sheet metal if you choose to use loose fill.
